Javascript Video Game Coding

2019 SUMMER CAMP

New this summer! Learn to build video games in Javascript that will run natively on HTML5 websites. In addition to regular Javascript, we will be using the Phaser game framework, which adds physics, animation and more. This is a great next step for kids with previous coding experience who are ready for a challenge!

2019 Javascript Video Game Coding Camp Schedule

This camp is offered at both our Chicago location (2867 N Clybourn Ave) and our North Shore location (3434 Central St, Evanston, inside Unity Church on the North Shore), serving Evanston, Skokie, Wilmette and neighboring areas.

How the Time is Structured

Camps are 4.5 hours long, and we give brains and bodies a chance to recharge with two 30 minute outdoor breaks. This may include walks around the neighborhood, social "hang-out" time at a green space, or casual games such as frisbee or basketball at our nearby park.

Daily Schedule

What Students Will Learn and Do

  • Learn the Javascript coding language through a series of video game projects
  • Cover intermediate and advanced coding techniques, including object-oriented programming and algorithmically generated worlds
  • Use a third party game framework called Phaser to support physics and animation, and promote standard game development practices
  • Use developer tools to trace and find errors in code and understand common sources of errors

The Javascript lessons will start out with language fundamentals and then hone in on Phaser framework and techniques that are most useful for the video games we are building.

Students should have at least one prior coding class, and feel ready for a challenge. We also recommend a background in HTML basics. Please give us a call if you are not sure if this class is the right level for you.

Sports Add-On (Full Day Camp 9am-5pm)

Note: Available in Chicago only

We are pleased to offer the option to add a half day of sports and games with our partner, We Got Game, to this camp.

Sports will primarily take place at Burley Elementary and may include swim time at Hamlin Park (dry activities will be accommodated for kids who don't swim).

The add-on includes lunch hour supervision at Hamlin Park, and an escorted walk between the two camps.

Please note that you will drop off in the morning at one camp and pick up in the afternoon at the other.

The Javascript language and the Phaser game framework are both free, open source software that can be used by students at home after the camp.

We will provide guidance on how to install the development tools we are using at home.

Class Size & Instructors

Camps are capped at 8 students, and will have a 4:1 ratio or better at this age group.

Our instructors are adults with post-secondary coding education. We hire talented high school students as teaching assistants and to provide near-peer interactions.
