Coding and Robotics

Continue growing your coding skills and bring them into the real world! If you have solid Scratch skills, you are ready to learn how code can be used on lights, sensors, motors and sounds to bring robotic creations to life. In this class, you will spend about half the time coding and half the time building with electronics and everyday craft supplies. It's a great mix that unlocks new challenges and creativity!

What Kids Will Learn and Do

This class will show kids how they can use their coding skills, some electronic components and everyday supplies to create working robotics that can sense, think and act in the real world.

  • Understand basics of robotics, sensors, power, motors and more
  • Expand your coding skills with a new block-based language and new commands to control your electronics
  • Build and code color changing lamps, upgraded costume accessories, a crawling robot and more with MakeCode and Circuit Playground Express
  • Combine hardware and software creation to multiply your skills

Electricity used in these projects is at very low, safe levels.

Class Schedule

Students at this level select one regular day and time to attend. We offer this class three times per week.

Make up lessons are permitted for missed classes with 24 hour advance notice, but the same lesson cannot be guaranteed.

Class Size & Instructors

Classes are capped at 8 students, and will have a 4:1 ratio or better at this age group.

Our instructors are adults who are studying or have completed post-secondary education. We hire talented high school students as teaching assistants and to provide near-peer interactions.

All of our instructors have relevant coding or technology expertise and are trained at Power Up in teaching skills and the specifics of our Coding Curriculum.

Promotion to the next level

Kids learn to code at different speeds based on age, other experiences and practice time. We recommend one school year at this level for most kids in 3rd-5th grade. Younger kids may need longer and older kids or those who practice coding in between lessons may progress faster.

To promote a student, we are looking for fluency and demonstrated understanding of core coding concepts of loops, variables, conditionals and events. Students should also be able to take a robotic challenge and design, build and code a creation to address it.

Registration & Pricing

This class offers monthly registration.

You can join this class at the start of any month. If you are joining mid-year, we will do an orientation and plan your entry so that you are ready to join the class.

Monthly fees are $120 for a regular month with 4 one-hour lessons. This fee is prorated up or down for months with 3 or 5 lessons. It will be automatically billed to your credit card within the first 3 days of each month of classes.

NOTE: Fees are based on the number of *scheduled* lessons for your class, not on how many lessons you actually attend.

Refunds & Cancellations

Fees are charged to your credit card within the first 3 days of each month of classes. You may cancel your enrollment at any time and we will not make the next charge. No refunds are issued for cancelling in the middle of a month.

Hardware, Accounts & Materials

Computers and all required hardware are provided for use during class. We will start with the Circuit Playground Express from Adafruit, and possibly use the Micro:bit in later projects as well.

For kids who want to have their own electronics to work with at home, we will have kits available for purchase or a list for purchasing your own components online.

MakeCode is free and available online for kids to continue coding at home during and after the class.
