Code Your Own Video Games in Scratch

Our popular Code Your Own Video Games camp introduces kids to the excitement and power of coding by teaching them to make real, working video games, just like the ones they love to play! Using the Scratch language, they will create games like Crossy Road, Galaga and many others and learn coding basics including loops, events, conditional logic and variables.

What Kids Will Learn and Do

This is a hands-on class where we make a new video game every day. It is the perfect place to start your coding journey, and projects are taught step-by-step.

  • Learn to use the Scratch environment to select characters and add code to make them move, interact and react
  • Practice recognizing and remembering coding patterns to build skills for more advanced projects
  • Add creativity and customization along the way, and design your own game by the end of the week!
  • Gain exposure to fundamental programming concepts and practices such as events, loops, if statements, variables, testing and debugging

How Time is Structured

Camps are 3 hours long, and we break up the time into one hour blocks to work with kids' natural learning rhythms. In the middle hour, we take them outside and have unstructured playground time to build friendships and refresh young brains and bodies. The group walks a short distance to Bent Park in Evanston..

Class Size & Instructors

Camps are capped at 8 students, and will have a 4:1 ratio or better at this age group.

Our instructors are adults who are studying or have completed post-secondary education. We hire talented high school students as teaching assistants and to provide near-peer interactions.

All of our instructors have relevant coding or technology expertise.

Hardware, Accounts & Materials

Computers and all required hardware are provided.

Scratch is an online language and we will help kids get set up with an account on the first day, if they do not already have one.

Scratch is free and fully available for kids to continue coding at home during and after the camp.
